About Whinny Warmers™ and Summer Whinnys™
Our equine socks came about because we wanted simple and nontoxic solutions to simple issues regarding our horse’s legs. In the winter, our horses benefited from warm legs. It didn’t make sense that we could put a blanket on then, but their most valuable assets, their legs, were completely unprotected! That was the beginning of Whinny Warmers™. Then it only made sense to transition from the winter socks into summer socks that would offer our horses nontoxic protection from biting flies. Whinny Warmers™ are for cold weather, offering warmth to equine legs, while the Summer Whinnys™ are all about nontoxic protection from biting flies.
Summer Whinnys™ have been complex in their development. They have to be strong enough to stay up on the legs for hours, light and cool to wear and composed of a knit that flies can’t easily penetrate. We believe we achived that and more. With the addition of Fosshield™ silver and copper ion technology, bacteria, fungi and mold growth in the sock is inhibited.
Go to www.fosshield.com to learn about silver and copper ion technology and where it’s being utilized today. Summer Whinnys™ offer protection from biting flies and allow for a healthy environment around the legs!
Whinny Warmers™ and Summer Whinnys™ are very long socks specially designed to fit horses. They purposely do not have snaps, clasps, hooks, zippers, or Velcro fasteners that can lead to twisting or improper compression. They are simple. We left complex attachment systems behind in favor of safe and simple.
Whinny Warmers™ and Summer Whinnys™ are not meant to offer compression therapy to the legs and therefore they will slide down the leg eventually. The only place compression is present is in the top 10 inches of the sock and there is only enough compression to hold the sock in place for a number of hours.
It's very common for the socks to stay in place for 5-6 hours or longer, but it depends on how active your horse is. If you have a very active horse, you will be pulling up the socks more often than people with older or quiet horses.
We designed Whinny Warmers™ and Summer Whinnys™ to be safe for horses. If a horse gets hung up by the sock, the sock will slide off or give way to the thing that it has become tangled with.
The bottom of the sock, the cuff, is designed to help keep the sock from slipping over the horse's hoof, but any real activity by the horse could result in the sock coming partially or completely off.
With the exception of when we are riding or exercising our horses, the socks stay on them 24 & 7. We don’t worry about them while they are wearing the socks. We keep our horses in pasture and over the years socks came off particularly when we were in the first stages of getting the compression elements of the design right. They seldom lose their socks now, but it can happen.
We've never had a horse injured because of a sock coming off. Never! But you shouldn't ride or exercise your horse if it's wearing Whinny Warmers™ or Summer Whinnys™.
